Birželio 3-iąją minima Pasaulinė dviračio diena.

Važiavimas dviračiu – ne tik ekologiška transporto rūšis, bet ir sveiką gyvenseną skatinanti priemonė. Pastebėta, kad šis sportas sumažina širdies ligų, insulto, tam tikrų vėžio formų, diabeto riziką.

Pasaulinę dviračio dieną valstybės raginamos gerinti kelių eismo saugumą, sudaryti tinkamas sąlygas dviračių takų infrastruktūrai mieste, skatinti visuomenės įprotį nuo vaikystės važinėtis dviračiais, organizuoti dviračių žygius.

Pirmieji dviračio prototipai pavaizduoti Babilonijos, Egipto reljefuose ir Pompėjos freskose. Leonardo da Vinčio užrašuose (1493 m.) taip pat rastas dviračio eskizas.

Dviračio išradėju laikomas vokietis Karlas Draizas. 1817 m. liepos 12 d. savo sumeistruotu balansiniu dviračiu( be pedalų) jis nuvažiavo iš Manheimo iki Švecingeno. Dviratis turėjo du vienodo dydžio ratus, vairo rankenas ir stabdžius.

Dviračio su pedalais išradėjas - kalvis Kirkpatrikas Macmillanas, gyvenęs Anglijoje, Courthillo. 1839 m. jo pagamintas dviratis svėrė 34 kg, buvo sudarytas iš medinio rėmo su išdrožta arklio galva ir dviejų guma padengtų geležinių ratų. Priekinis buvo 80 cm skersmens, o užpakalinis - 110 cm. Pedalus ir užpakalinį ratą jungė svertai, kuriuos, norint važiuoti, reikėjo judinti pirmyn ir atgal.
